Choose options
Woman with a Parasol in a Garden, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1875, depicts a fashionable woman in a dark dress and wide-brimmed white hat standing beneath a parasol amid a dense tangle of wildflowers, while a companion bends to gather blossoms nearby. Despite its countryside appearance, the scene was painted in the garden of Renoir's own studio in Montmartre, then still a semi-rural quarter on the edge of Paris. Rendered in the loose, broken brushwork of high Impressionism, the composition reduces the figures to small notes of color within an enveloping field of grass and bloom, celebrating the dappled light and abundance of a Parisian summer.
