Street with Chestnuts Blossoming, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, captures a tree-lined avenue in Arles glowing with the blossoms of spring, rendered in van Gogh’s swirling, richly textured brushwork. Two figures beneath an umbrella stroll along the sunlit path, their forms dissolved into loose strokes of color that convey dappled light filtering through the chestnut canopy. Painted during the final weeks of his stay in Arles, shortly before he entered the asylum at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the work reflects the exuberant color and energetic mark-making that defined his most productive Provençal period.
