Still Life with Bible (Stilleven met Bijbel), 1885 by Vincent van Gogh

Still Life with Bible, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1885, shows his late father’s heavy leather-bound Bible lying open beneath a spent candle, its pale pages glowing against a near-black background, with a small yellow-covered novel by Emile Zola resting nearby on the worn table. Painted in Nuenen shortly after his father’s death, the still life quietly sets the weight of religious tradition against the modern secular world Van Gogh felt drawn toward. Its somber palette and dramatic lighting mark one of the strongest achievements of his early Dutch period.
