Stacks of Wheat, End of Summer (Meules, fin de l’été), painted by Claude Monet in 1890-91 captures two towering grain stacks rising from the fields outside his Giverny farmhouse, their forms softened into rose and lavender shadow against a hazy green-gold countryside. Monet worked on this composition alongside two dozen related canvases, moving from easel to easel as the light shifted through the day and season. The series’ celebrated 1891 debut at Galerie Durand-Ruel in Paris proved a turning point, establishing Monet’s practice of painting the same subject repeatedly to trace the passage of atmosphere and time.
