Shoes, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1886, presents a single worn pair of leather boots set upon a tiled floor, rendered in an earthy palette of ochre, rust, and grey with the thick, textured brushwork that defined his Paris still lifes. Painted after Van Gogh purchased the battered boots at a Paris flea market, the composition transforms a humble, discarded object into a meditation on toil, poverty, and the dignity of manual labour. Now in the collection of the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam, it remains one of the most philosophically resonant still lifes in his entire body of work.
