Seascape Near Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, painted by Vincent van Gogh in June 1888, captures the vivid blues and greens of the Mediterranean during his brief excursion from Arles to the fishing village on the coast. Rendered partly with a palette knife, the thick impasto and energetic, assured brushwork give the choppy waves, fishing boats, and wide sky a striking immediacy. One of a small group of marine paintings from Van Gogh’s only visit to the sea, it stands among the most joyful and direct works of his Arles period.
Artist: Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890). Date: 1888.
