Sandvika, Norway, painted by Claude Monet in 1895, shows a snow-covered Norwegian village huddled beneath a wintry hillside, its iron bridge arching over the icy stream in the foreground. Monet painted the scene in whites, silvery grays and cool blues during his two-month winter campaign near Christiania, and the bridge is thought to have reminded him of the Japanese bridge at Giverny. One of more than two dozen canvases from that arduous Norwegian journey, it now belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago.
