Roses, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890, was created in May of that year at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, on the eve of Van Gogh’s departure for Auvers-sur-Oise. A dense, exuberant arrangement of white roses fills the canvas in bold, animated brushwork against a luminous teal-green background, the swirling petals and rich foliage pulsing with the creative vitality that defined the final months of his life. Held today in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, it stands among the most joyful and botanically alive still lifes of his entire career.
