Painted in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in May 1890 in anticipation of his discharge from the asylum, Vincent van Gogh's Roses presents a bouquet of white roses in full bloom, rendered in his characteristic swirling brushwork with a palette of extraordinary delicacy and freshness that marks it as among the most tenderly beautiful of all his floral paintings. The work belongs to a celebrated group of flower paintings from this final Saint-Rémy period, including his famous irises, in which Van Gogh channelled a quality of pure lyrical joy and sensory delight into the rendering of flowers. Now held in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, it is one of the most beloved of his late works. A radiantly beautiful and deeply joyful work for any interior drawn to the finest of Post-Impressionism.
