Roses, 1890 by Vincent van Gogh

Roses, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890, presents a generous bouquet of white roses gathered in a simple clay vase, set against a shimmering field of green brushstrokes. Painted at Saint-Rémy just before his departure from the asylum, it belongs to a final quartet of large still lifes conceived as a calm, hopeful farewell to that chapter of his life, its petals once tinged with pink that has since faded with time. The sweeping, curling strokes surrounding the flowers give the whole composition a sense of gentle motion and quiet renewal.
Artist: Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890). Date: 1890.
