Roman Road at Bordighera (Strada Romana a Bordighera), painted by Claude Monet in 1884 follows an empty coastal road past flowering shrubs and tall palms toward distant lavender mountains near the Italian-French border. Monet spent three months in Bordighera during his first extended Mediterranean painting trip, drawn by its intense light and exotic vegetation so different from Normandy. He left the road deliberately deserted, treating the scene less as a picturesque view than as a study of the sharp midday light and heat of the Riviera.
