The Restaurant de la Sirène at Asnières, painted by Vincent van Gogh in the summer of 1887, depicts the same riverside restaurant near Paris in a brighter, more vividly colored rendering than his earlier version of the scene. The rich oranges, blues, and greens reflect his rapid absorption of Neo-Impressionist color theory following his exposure to the work of Seurat and Signac. Now held in the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, this exuberant and historically significant painting marks the moment Van Gogh’s palette transformed toward the boldness that would carry through the rest of his career.

Artist: Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890). Date: 1887.

The Restaurant de la Sirène at Asnières, 1887 by Vincent van Gogh. Post-Impressionist Cityscape Wall Art Canvas Print.

A note on this reproduction: this print reflects the brighter, cooler blue and green tones of the later Musée d'Orsay version. A more muted, sepia-toned reproduction of the earlier Ashmolean version is also available in our collection.
