Restaurant de la Sirène, painted by Vincent van Gogh in the spring of 1887, captures a riverside restaurant in Asnières, just outside Paris, rendered in a muted, subtly toned palette with straw-like, Impressionist-derived brushstrokes. The composition reflects Van Gogh’s evolving technique as he absorbed the lessons of the Impressionists he encountered in the French capital. This version of the scene, now held in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, marks an early stage in his transition toward the brighter, more expressive style that would define his later work.

Artist: Vincent van Gogh (Dutch, 1853-1890). Date: 1887.

Restaurant de la Sirène, 1887 by Vincent van Gogh. Post-Impressionist Cityscape Wall Art Canvas Print.

A note on this reproduction: this print reflects the muted, warm sepia and tan tones of the earlier Ashmolean version. A brighter, cooler-toned reproduction of the later Musée d'Orsay version is also available in our collection.
