Regatta at Argenteuil (Les Barques, Régates à Argenteuil), painted by Claude Monet in 1874 gathers a flotilla of white sails on the Seine while spectators watch from the grassy bank at the left, the pale cream sky melting into shimmering reflections on the water. The boat basin at Argenteuil, a favourite playground of Parisian sailors, gave Monet an endless supply of moving light to study. Created in the very year of the first Impressionist exhibition, this luminous regatta scene belongs to the celebrated Argenteuil canvases now associated with the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
