Red Vineyards at Arles, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888, depicts vineyard workers harvesting grapes beneath a blazing autumn sunset, the vines rendered in extraordinary reds, oranges, and purples that seem to set the whole landscape alight. Van Gogh painted the scene from memory after a walk near Montmajour with Paul Gauguin, transforming an ordinary harvest into a vision of almost hallucinatory colour and heat. It holds a unique place in his story as the only painting he is documented to have sold during his lifetime, purchased by the Belgian painter Anna Boch in 1890.
