Painted in November 1888 at Arles, Vincent van Gogh's Red Vineyards at Arles is one of the most celebrated works of his entire career — a magnificent vision of the grape harvest at sunset in which the vineyard blazes with extraordinary reds, purples, and yellows under a golden autumn sky. Famously the only painting Van Gogh sold during his lifetime, it was purchased by the Belgian artist Anna Boch in 1890 and is now held in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow. The work represents the extraordinary chromatic ambition of his Arles period at its most exhilarating, the vineyard workers moving through a landscape of almost hallucinatory colour.
