Promenaders in the Garden of the Poet, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888, shows couples strolling beneath tall pines and a distinctive blue conifer in the public garden across from his Yellow House in Arles, the greens rendered in rich, varied brushwork beneath a dappled sky. Van Gogh imagined this corner of the garden as the setting evoked by Dante and Petrarch, hoping the space he shared with Paul Gauguin might itself become a kind of poet’s retreat. The painting is one of several views he made of the garden that autumn, each exploring its romantic and literary associations.
