Spring in Giverny, Afternoon Effect (Printemps à Giverny, effet d’après-midi), painted by Claude Monet in 1885 looks across a fresh green meadow dotted with young fruit trees in blossom toward the village of Giverny, whose church spire and clustered rooftops rise against a soft blue afternoon sky. Monet had settled in the Normandy hamlet only two years earlier, and here he studies how warm afternoon light plays over orchard, grass and stone. The canvas belongs to a pair of spring views of the fields around Giverny, and it was acquired directly from the artist by the Paris dealer Durand-Ruel in September 1885.
Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926). Date: 1885.
