Pourville, near Dieppe (Pourville, près de Dieppe), painted by Claude Monet in 1882 sweeps across the broad sands of Pourville at low tide, where cool blue shadows ripple over the wet beach toward a calm sea. At right the chalk cliff rises steeply, its sunlit face warmed with ochre and rose, while the distant headlands of the Normandy coast fade into a pearly sky. Monet settled in this small fishing village near Dieppe in 1882, and luminous views like this one capture the wind-scrubbed Channel atmosphere that drew him back to the coast again and again.
