Port-Goulphar, Belle-Île, painted by Claude Monet in 1886, captures a rugged cove on the wild Atlantic coast of Brittany, where dark jagged rocks enclose a sheltered pool of brilliant emerald and turquoise water beneath a pale sky. Monet painted it during his stormy autumn campaign on Belle-Île, the largest of the Breton islands, where he stayed for more than two months, transfixed by the savage coastline so unlike the gentle Normandy beaches he knew. These Belle-Île seascapes marked a turning point in his career, showing that the broken color of Impressionism could carry drama and raw natural force.
