Pollarded Willows and Setting Sun, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888, depicts a row of stubby, pollarded willow trees silhouetted against a blazing yellow and orange sunset near Arles, the tall grasses and stripped trunks rendered in swirling, urgent brushwork. Painted in March 1888 soon after his arrival in the south of France, the small oil on cardboard already shows Van Gogh pushing colour and mark toward the expressive intensity that would define his mature style. Its dramatic sky and stark, gestural trees anticipate the emotional power of his later sunset and cypress paintings.
