Landscape at Villez (Paysage à Villez), painted by Claude Monet, frames a shimmering view of the Seine through a veil of sunlit poplar and willow branches, their dappled greens and golds scattered across the canvas in loose, vibrating strokes. Monet made several such views along the river near Port-Villez, close to his home at Giverny, using the screen of foliage to break the composition into fragments of color and light. The result is one of his most decoratively patterned river landscapes, prefiguring the immersive, all-over compositions of his later career.
