Ball Shaped Tree, Argenteuil, painted by Claude Monet in 1876 depicts the lower end of the riverside promenade at Argenteuil as seen across the Seine from Le Petit Gennevilliers, its distinctive spherically-pruned tree anchoring a composition of reflected sky, houses, and foliage. Rather than the sailboats and bridges of his other Argenteuil river views, Monet turns his attention to the quiet interplay of light and reflection on the water's still surface, arranging the scene in flattened horizontal bands recalling the Japanese woodblock prints he collected and admired.
