Magpie (La Pie), painted by Claude Monet during the winter of 1868-1869 shows a single black-and-white magpie perched atop a wattle-fence gate, its dark silhouette the only sharp note against an expanse of snow-covered fields near Etretat. Long blue shadows stretch across the drifts in the low winter sun, an early and daring use of colored shadow rather than the flat black conventionally used to render snow. Rejected by the Paris Salon of 1869, the painting is now considered one of Monet's largest and most celebrated snowscapes.
