The Magpie (La Pie), painted by Claude Monet in 1868-1869 captures a single magpie perched on a rustic wattle gate beside a snow-covered Normandy farmyard bathed in pale winter light. Long shadows stretch across the fresh snow in delicate shades of blue and lavender, while a red-roofed cottage and bare, frost-laden trees complete the hushed rural scene. One of the artist’s earliest and largest winter landscapes, it reveals his pioneering study of colored shadow and reflected light years before Impressionism was named.
