The Ice Floes (Les Glaçons), painted by Claude Monet in 1880, shows broken slabs of ice drifting down the Seine near Vétheuil, framed by rows of bare poplars dissolving into a cold lavender-blue haze. Monet painted the scene after the brutal winter of 1879 to 1880, when the frozen river broke apart in a thunderous thaw that he recorded in a remarkable series of canvases. Created during a somber period following the death of his wife Camille, these hushed winter pictures are among the most poetic and atmospheric works of his Vétheuil years.
