Palazzo da Mula, Venice, painted by Claude Monet in 1908 renders the Gothic tracery and pink-hued stone of the Grand Canal palazzo in soft veils of topaz and lapis blue, its reflection rippling beneath a pair of moored gondolas. Monet made the trip to Venice late in his career, at the urging of his wife Alice, and produced thirty-seven canvases of the city’s canals and landmarks in just a few months. Rather than architectural precision, he pursued the shimmering interplay of stone, water, and light that defined his mature Impressionist style.
