Lavacourt under Snow (Lavacourt sous la Neige), painted by Claude Monet between 1878 and 1881 shows the tiny hamlet of Lavacourt on the Seine wrapped in deep winter, its stone cottages and bare trees rising from a snow-covered bank while a rosy dawn light warms the hills across the river. Monet painted the village from Vétheuil on the opposite shore, where he lived during one of the harshest and most difficult periods of his life. The subtle blues, pinks and violets woven through the snow reveal his gift for finding rich colour in the quietest of winter scenes.
