Landscape from Saint-Rémy, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, presents the view of the rolling Provençal countryside as seen from the grounds of the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, rendered in the swirling, densely worked brushwork and saturated blues and greens characteristic of his year at Saint-Rémy. Van Gogh returned to this hillside view repeatedly under changing light and weather, using it as a recurring motif through which to explore mood and atmosphere during his convalescence. Now held in the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen, it is a striking example of how he transformed a familiar, confined view into a vision of expressive intensity.
