Landing Stage with Boats (Les Bateaux amarrés), painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1888, looks down from above onto boats moored at a quay on the Rhône near the Place Lamartine in Arles, the green water and cream-colored jetty rendered in bold, flattened color planes with a tricolor flag marking one of the vessels. The elevated, almost aerial viewpoint gives the composition an unusual compactness, contrasting the vivid green of the river with the warm tones of the moored barges and unloading dock. The picture belongs to Van Gogh's series of boat and river subjects from his first Arles summer, in which the quiet activity of the waterfront became a vehicle for his exploration of color and light.
