La Grenouillère, painted by Claude Monet in 1869, depicts the popular bathing and boating resort on the Seine at Bougival, where a circular wooden platform crowded with fashionable Parisians floats beside moored rowboats and a floating café. Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir set up their easels side by side here in the summer of 1869, each capturing the shimmering, broken reflections of light on the water in canvases now considered among the first true works of Impressionism. This version is held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
