La Gare Saint-Lazare, painted by Claude Monet in 1877 is one of twelve canvases in his celebrated series depicting the great Parisian railway terminus, its iron-and-glass canopy filled with billowing steam that dissolves locomotives and architecture alike into a shimmering study of light and atmosphere. Monet's first sustained series devoted to a single motif, the paintings were largely completed in the first half of 1877 and seven were shown that spring at the Third Impressionist Exhibition, where they were received as one of the movement's most audacious achievements.
