Irises, 1890 by Vincent van Gogh

Irises, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1890, gathers a loose bouquet of violet-blue irises in a cream stoneware pitcher set on a green tabletop, rendered in the confident, curling brushwork of his final weeks at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum. Van Gogh completed this bouquet in May 1890, just before leaving Saint-Rémy-de-Provence for Auvers-sur-Oise, seeking what he called a “harmonious and soft” effect against a background originally pink but since faded to pale cream from his use of fugitive red pigment. The painting has been part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s collection in New York since 1958.
