Impression, Sunrise, painted by Claude Monet in 1872 depicts the harbor of Le Havre at dawn, its masts and cranes dissolving into mist as a small boat crosses the glowing reflection of the rising sun. Painted from a hotel window overlooking the port, the loose brushwork and unfinished feel of the scene startled critics when it appeared at the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874, prompting a hostile review that mockingly coined the word “Impressionism” itself. The painting now hangs in the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris as the movement’s founding image.
