Île de la Grande Jatte Through the Trees, painted by Claude Monet in 1878 depicts the Seine glimpsed through a dense screen of foliage from the wooded island west of Paris, with the rooftops of Courbevoie visible on the far bank. Monet made this view as one of eight canvases painted on the island that spring, working from a vantage point inside the trees rather than his more customary open riverbank. The freely broken brushwork and screen-like framing anticipate the more radical spatial experiments of his later career.
