Houses on the Achterzaan, painted by Claude Monet in 1871 depicts a row of gabled waterfront houses and trees along a tributary of the Zaan river near Zaandam, the Netherlands, where Monet spent several productive months following the Franco-Prussian War. A lone white sailboat glides across the reflective water in the foreground, its form echoed in the rippling surface below. The painting belongs to a series of roughly two dozen views Monet made of the Zaandam waterways, marking one of his earliest sustained engagements with the flat northern light and maritime architecture of the Dutch landscape.
