Haystacks at Chailly, painted by Claude Monet in 1865 depicts two dark haystacks silhouetted against a luminous dusk sky near the village of Chailly-en-Bière, close to the Fontainebleau forest. Painted when Monet was only twenty-five, the work reveals his earliest experiments with capturing the fleeting effects of evening light across an open field, decades before he returned to the same subject in his celebrated 1890s series.
