Gulf of Antibes, painted by Claude Monet in 1888, captures the turquoise waters of the gulf sweeping toward the distant Esterel mountains and the silhouetted rooftops of the old town, rendered in the fluid, atmospheric brushwork of his mature Impressionist practice. Monet painted the view during his four-month stay on the French Riviera, one of nearly forty canvases in which he sought to render the extraordinary luminosity and color intensity of the Mediterranean coast. The work belongs to a celebrated series that transformed European collectors' understanding of southern light.
