Glade, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1909 presents a sun-dappled clearing among slender trees near Cagnes-sur-Mer, rendered in a shimmering, near-abstract haze of golden yellows, warm pinks, and lavender shadow that dissolves the landscape into pure light and color. The simple woodland subject becomes, through Renoir's late handling, a vision of the intense southern sun he loved in his final years, the brushwork remarkably fluid and confident despite the crippling arthritis that by 1909 had begun to affect his hands. The finished painting is now held in the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, one of the premier collections of Renoir's late work.
