Girl Reading, 1890 (La Lecture) by Pierre-Auguste Renoir

Girl Reading, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1890 shows a young woman in a vivid orange dress reclining on a sofa, entirely absorbed in the small book she holds, her face lit by the warm golden light of the curtained interior behind her. By 1890 Renoir had moved away from the diffuse touch of his earlier Impressionist landscapes toward a fuller, more solidly modeled treatment of the figure, and this intimate domestic subject is one of many similar paintings of young women reading, sewing, or at their toilet that he returned to throughout the 1890s. Now in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, it remains one of the most quietly appealing of Renoir's interior figure paintings.
