Gare Saint-Lazare, painted by Claude Monet in 1877 captures the cavernous iron-and-glass train shed in billowing clouds of steam, with locomotives emerging indistinctly from the haze beneath the station’s skylights. Monet secured special permission from the railway company to set up his easel on the platforms, producing a series of twelve canvases that turned the modern, industrial subject of a Parisian train station into a study of atmosphere and light. Shown at the third Impressionist exhibition in 1877, the series remains one of the movement’s boldest statements on urban modernity.
