Gare Saint-Lazare, Paris, painted by Claude Monet in 1877, captures the vast, steam-filled interior of the great Parisian terminus, its iron canopy and arriving locomotives dissolving into a shimmering haze of white and grey beneath diffused northern light. Monet painted the station on site with special permission from the railway company, producing twelve canvases that form his first sustained series devoted to a single subject. The work is among the most technically ambitious of the group, transforming an industrial, modern subject into pure atmospheric sensation.
