Field of Banana Trees, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1881 depicts a dense screen of banana-plant leaves in the Essai garden at Hamma, with the white buildings of Algiers and the blue bay glimpsed beyond, painted during Renoir's formative journey to Algeria in the spring of 1881. Following the example of Delacroix, whom he deeply admired, Renoir made the trip after Paul Durand-Ruel began buying his work regularly, and the brilliant North African light and exotic vegetation transformed his palette toward the warmer, more luminous color of his mature Impressionist style. The painting is now held in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris.
