Factories, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1887, turns his attention to the industrial suburb of Asnières-Clichy on the outskirts of Paris, where smoking chimneys and terracotta-roofed factory buildings rise above coal heaps and a dirt roadway. Van Gogh briefly experimented with the dotted, Pointillist technique of Georges Seurat and Paul Signac in passages of this canvas, while keeping the emotional directness that was entirely his own. An unusual and historically resonant subject within his body of work.
