Étretat, the Beach and the Porte d’Amont, painted by Claude Monet in 1883, presents the pebbled beach at Étretat crowded with fishing boats beneath the soaring chalk cliff pierced by the Porte d’Amont arch. Monet captures the interplay of foaming surf, overcast sky, and the golden tones of hulls and rope, a study in the shifting light of the Normandy coast. Now held in the Musée d’Orsay, the canvas belongs to the extended series Monet painted at Étretat during the early 1880s, when he returned repeatedly to record its cliffs under changing conditions.
