Étretat Beach and the Porte d’Amont, painted by Claude Monet in 1883, depicts fishing boats drawn up along the shingle beach beneath the towering chalk cliff and natural arch known as the Porte d’Amont on the Normandy coast. Small figures stroll the shore as gentle waves curl onto the sand, rendered in the loose, luminous brushwork that defines Monet’s mature style. The painting belongs to a series of more than twenty views Monet made of Étretat’s dramatic cliffs during a stay in February 1883.
