Dovecote at Bellevue, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in c. 1888, captures a traditional French dovecote and its surrounding garden near Aix-en-Provence, rendered in the warm, richly coloured palette and freely handled brushwork of his mature Impressionist style. Renoir painted the scene during his 1889 visit to Cézanne, staying at a house rented from Cézanne's sister and brother-in-law near Bellevue; several works by Cézanne depict the same pigeon tower from a similar angle. The painting glows with the characteristic warmth and light that mark Renoir's treatment of the French rural landscape.
