Dieppe, painted by Claude Monet in 1882 presents a sweeping view of the Norman port town from a hilltop vantage behind its old castle, with a lone figure standing at the edge of the rise as rooftops, a church tower, and the surrounding valley recede beneath a clouded sky. It was one of only two paintings Monet completed during his brief ten-day visit to Dieppe that February, a fleeting stop between his longer Normandy coastal campaigns.
