Dance in the Country, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in 1883, is one of a celebrated pair of dance paintings — the other being Dance in the City — that together represent the social worlds of both rural festivity and bourgeois Parisian life with equal charm and visual brilliance. Renoir's friend Paul Lhôte and his companion Aline Charigot, who later became the artist's wife, modeled for the country dancers, she in a bright red-orange bonnet, holding a fan in her yellow-gloved hand as she spins across the terrace of a country inn. Both paintings are now held in the Musée d'Orsay, Paris, and are among the most universally beloved works in the Impressionist canon.
