Wheat Field with Cypresses, painted by Vincent van Gogh in 1889, sweeps a golden Provençal wheat field beneath a churning, wind-whipped sky, framed by a silvery olive bush at left and a towering, flame-shaped cypress at right, with the pale Alpilles mountains rising behind. Painted during his year at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum near Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, the canvas channels his restless, rhythmic brushwork into one of the defining landscapes of his late career, where turbulent sky and steady earth hold each other in tension. It remains among the most celebrated views he made of the surrounding countryside.
