Customs Post at Dieppe, painted by Claude Monet in 1882 depicts the small stone customs officer’s cottage perched on the clifftop at Petit-Ailly, its red-tiled roof and wildflower-covered slope set against a hazy expanse of sea and sky. Monet devoted some fourteen canvases to this same modest cabin during his 1882 stay near Dieppe, returning to it repeatedly to record how the coastal light transformed an otherwise unremarkable structure.
