Cup of Chocolate, painted by Pierre-Auguste Renoir in c. 1914, presents a young woman resting her head on her hand as she stirs a cup of chocolate at a table set with a porcelain creamer and a loose bouquet of flowers, rendered in the warm, softly luminous palette of his late Impressionist style. The painting belongs to a celebrated tradition of intimate domestic figure studies, now in the collection of the Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia, in which Renoir depicted young women in the relaxed pleasures of daily life with a warmly attentive, sensuous touch. A warmly intimate and beautifully painted work for any interior drawn to the domestic pleasures of the French Impressionists.
